Narrative
Picture a morning that starts ordinary and ends seemingly without hope. A violent outburst. An imaginary voice. A self-harming action. An elopement. An attempt. In an instant, dreams shatter, worry floods and a high sea of doubts replaces peace. For many, this is how a child’s mental health challenges arrive.
Families are rocked when a child suffers an illness. First, by the day’s events. Second, by stigmas. Third, by the healthcare system. Every child facing a diagnosis deserves excellent treatment, facilities and support
However, that doesn’t always happen. Add the words psychiatric or mental illness and reality quickly sobers expectations.
Parents experience the shock of confusing and dangerous symptoms. They grieve the loss of dreams, face limits on autonomy, and feel the sting of stigmas. They face baffling insurance barriers, rationed treatments and outdated treatment centers. The impact is a high toll on the child, their parents, siblings and much more.
None of this is as it should be.
We imagine a day when parents will know their challenges are understood and respected.
We imagine parents experiencing sustaining care in even the messiest parts of the journey. We imagine parents finding rapid, well-funded and equitable treatment options. We imagine parents feeling peace with care delivered lovingly in state-of-the-art spaces. We imagine living life with mental illness and not fighting to get help for mental illness.
Imagination can become reality. Let’s get to work.
