The following distinctives set SHHIP apart from other organizations. We pledge to serve all to the best of our abilities. When a request exceeds our ability to serve well or is in conflict with our distinctives, we may refer out to other agencies. Even in that situation we will try to find ways to serve individuals to the best of our abilities.

SHHIP adheres to Christian principles
As we work to sustain hope, we believe that hope is rooted firmly in Jesus Christ in the tradition of historic orthodox Christianity. This is the lens through which we view the brokenness of today’s political, healthcare and social systems as well as the difficulties parents encounter in caring for their families.
We also believe in serving all clients well, regardless of their religious or non-religious affiliation. We further believe interactions with those of other faiths offers the opportunity to respectfully demonstrate Gospel hope and love. We may, when needed, serve clients well by pointing them to external resources.
SHHIP serves parents
Our focus is exclusively on parents, from the perspective of parents with shared struggles. We believe a parent who has experienced a crisis is best suited to share with another parent how to navigate a crisis.
SHHIP acknowledges boundaries of support
We are a support-focused organization but we are not a therapy agency or law firm. Also, we do not provide what is considered therapy or biblical counseling. We will always point people to appropriate therapeutic and counseling resources when needs are identified.
SHHIP is safe
We will report suspected abuse or neglect – always. We are not a safe place for predators or those who perpetuate harm. We are also committed to providing trauma-informed care.
SHHIP honors stories
Every child deserves to own their own story. We promise to preserve the struggles our own children face and ensure the details of their lives are theirs to tell. We respect the details our clients provide to us and keep them confidential as a best practice.
